Städtische Galerie Eichenmüllerhaus

The Eichenmüllerhaus Municipal Gallery opened in 1989. The building was constructed in the second half of the 18th century and was donated to the city of Lemgo by Gertrud Eichenmüller-Sonntag and her husband, Ludwig Eichenmüller.

This late-Baroque bourgeois palace, with its strict axial symmetry as seen from the exterior, is ideally suited for exhibitions of visual art thanks to its floor plan, which gives the impression of being livable, and has proven itself to be a particularly versatile exhibition venue for visual art in East Westphalia-Lippe. None of the other cities in the Lippe region operate comparable exhibition spaces of their own. The building offers six exhibition rooms on the ground floor, as well as open spaces suitable for garden parties or for displaying sculptures.

Year after year, eight to nine exhibitions are presented across the genres of painting, graphic art, sculpture, installation, photography, video, and performance. Each year, artists apply for the opportunity to exhibit.

The “Young Art Fellowship,” a nationally recognized award offered by the Old Hanseatic City of Lemgo and the STAFF STIFTUNG Lemgo, enriches the gallery’s annual program with two exhibitions. In the “Competition Entries” exhibition, three applicants present original works not only to the jury—which bases its decision on the originals—but also to the public. At the end of the scholarship year, the scholarship recipient exhibits the works created during their stay in Lemgo at the Städtische Galerie Eichenmüllerhaus. A catalog is published to accompany this exhibition.

The Eichenmüllerhaus Municipal Gallery in Lemgo/Brake provides a diverse and knowledgeable introduction to contemporary art. Collaborations with the Cultural Agency of the Lippe Regional Association, the Lippische Gesellschaft für Kunst e.V., and the Lippischer Künstlerbund e.V. enrich the range of exhibitions at the Städtische Galerie Eichenmüllerhaus. The Eichenmüllerhaus and its Friends offer interested residents of the city and region the opportunity to participate in the development of artistic personalities and art movements.

For groups, the gallery can also be opened outside of regular hours by arrangement. We are happy to welcome school classes to our premises. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff is always available for questions and discussions.
