The Lower Gate (Niederntor) is the southern entrance to the town of Blomberg, which was founded around 1250 by the nobleman Bernhard III zur Lippe. An old trade route, the "Kölnische Landstraße", led through the gate into the town. An important branch of the Westphalian Hellweg, this road came from Paderborn via the Teutoburg Forest near Horn and continued on to Hameln and Braunschweig. Blomberg originally had another gate, the Heutor (formerly "Hohes Tor"). The New Gate was only added later.
With quatrefoil openings on the sides, a final coat of arms (Lippische Rose) and stone spheres on the gable slopes, it combines Gothic and early Renaissance stylistic elements.
