"At the end of the Second World War, the Augustdorf barracks housed, among others, the SS tank replacement and training battalion 1 of the Waffen-SS. During the defense of the barracks on 02.04.1945 (Easter Monday), the battle in the Dörenschlucht gorge took place, in which 35 men of a convalescent company of the Waffen-SS and an unknown number of American soldiers fell.
The German soldiers were able to temporarily delay the advance of the 3rd US Armored Division by shooting down seven Sherman tanks, but were ultimately unsuccessful. The battle ended on 03.04.1945.
On the morning of the same day, it became known that the Americans had pushed through the Dörenschlucht gorge and split up on this side of the mountains. One part has moved via Hörste to Oerlinghausen, the other via Pivitsheide in the direction of Hiddesen."
