Experience station on the nature experience trail on Lügder Schildberg

When we're cold, we turn on the heating, and when we're hungry, we find everything our heart desires in the supermarket. In the past, people didn't have it as convenient and easy as we do today. Our ancestors still had to procure their building materials and food themselves and the forest played an important role in this. Here they gathered mushrooms, herbs and berries, hunted deer and other wild animals. People also drove their own animals into the woods, where they ate the falling acorns and beechnuts.

Wood in particular was of great importance to the people. They built their houses and furniture from tree trunks and branches. They needed the wood to make fires, for heating and for cooking. The inhabitants of Lügde also went into the forest here on the Schildberg and collected their firewood.

If you look a few meters further into the forest, you can see a memorial stone. Go and have a look at it! This memorial stone commemorates Johannes Eggert from Lügde, who suffered a fatal heart attack here while collecting wood in 1934. His family was already worried because Johannes had not turned up for lunch. Startled by the barking and howling of his dog, they followed the dog, which led the family to the dead man.

Did you know? In the past, the forest was also a pharmacy for people. Many remedies from the medicine chest have been forgotten today, but in the past most people knew very well which herbs and other natural products from the forest helped them with ailments. Pine essential oils, for example, cleared the airways and lime blossom helped with colds.
