The Oerlinghausen airfield was established in the aviation concept of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia as a "priority airfield for gliding", it is a "state performance base for the sport of gliding" and, through the "Gliding School" association, which as an international air sports school conducts training and further education in fixed courses, a state performance center with federal use for air sports.
Oerlinghausen airfield probably has the highest number of take-offs and landings with gliders in the world, with a total of around 50,000 aircraft movements per year. During the flying season (March to October), gliders are launched from five separate winch towing points, as well as being towed by gliders.
Motor gliders, microlights, hang gliders, paragliders, model airplanes and hot air balloons contribute to the above-mentioned movement figures, and some light motor planes are also at home here. The area of the site used as an airfield is approx. 650,000 square meters and is owned by the Flugplatzgemeinschaft e.V. We use approx. 80,000 square meters for flight operations.
The Oerlinghausen airfield is a popular excursion destination in the region. Sightseeing flights in the various air sports can be carried out. A restaurant caters for guests, and there is also sufficient parking space available.
