The sika deer loves sparse deciduous forests. It was naturalized in Europe at the end of the 18th century from Japan and north-east China. The cover (the fur) is reddish-brown with white spots in summer and dark brown to gray in winter. The sika deer is considerably weaker in stature and antlers than the native red deer and is more comparable in build to the fallow deer found here. The antlers of the sika deer are shed from April, the velvet is swept off in August / September before the rut begins in October. The stag sheds its antlers in March. The doe usually gives birth to a calf in May. Sika deer are hardy and have few demands on their plant food.
