The west tower was built as early as 1555. Today's Protestant Reformed parish church was built in 1842/43 as a simple rectangular hall building according to plans by Detmold architect Ferdinand Ludwig August Merckel.
The original pointed arched windows were replaced by upright rectangular openings as part of a comprehensive renovation in 1951-54.
The tower hall contains wall paintings from the second half of the 16th century, which were uncovered during renovation work in the 1950s.
The mausoleum on the tower side of the church was built by Countess Dorothea Amalie zu Lippe-Alverdissen in the winter of 1723/24. Her husband Count Philipp-Ernst I and later other members of the Lippe-Alverdissen line found their final resting place here.
