Schloss Alverdissen

A castle in Barntrup-Alverdissen was first mentioned in a document in 1396 as the seat of the county of Sternberg. After the destruction of the previous building, of which the cellar vaults and foundation walls were preserved, the castle was rebuilt to the east of the village center in 1662-63. In 1812, Princess Pauline zu Lippe acquired the castle and designated it as the seat of the Sternberg office. From 1879 to 1969, the castle was the seat of the district court. The building was redesigned several times in the 19th and 20th centuries and today appears as a simple two-storey rectangular building with a pitched roof. The former residential and farm buildings of the castle complex have been demolished. After extensive modernization from 1977-79, the castle was used as a branch of the Detmold State Archives until 2008. In 2009, Alverdissen Castle became private property and was extensively renovated and extended in June 2009.
