The Wilhelmsburg was built in 1892-94 by the alderman Wilhelm Borsdorf. From the very beginning, Wilhelmsburg was the home of various student fraternities (e.g. Unitas, Alemannen etc.) and clubs (sports clubs, shooting guild etc.). After the death of founder Wilhelm Borsdorf in 1905, his widow, Friederike Borsdorf, took over the business. The heyday of Wilhelmsbug is the 1950s. Extensive changes are made by Gerhard Borsdorf, who had previously been a butcher in Hamburg, after he takes over the business in 1967. In 1996, Wilhelmsburg is sold to the businessman Kurt Liebrecht from Lage, with Andreas Borsdorf remaining the leaseholder. In 2006, the Wilhelmsburg is sold to the restaurateur Michael Schmerder, who dies in 2007.
